Back 2 Back!: AIPHS Varsity Boys Cross Country Team Wins Second Consecutive Championship; Varsity Girls Place Second; 5 Runners Place All-BACSAC

(Oakland, CA) On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, the AIPHS Varsity Boys Cross Country Team won their second consecutive BACSAC Championship. With a team score of 21, the Golden Eagles outpaced Leadership Prep Richmond (45), and Oakland Charter (83).

After placing second individually at last year’s BACSAC Finals, AIPHS Senior Emerson Velasquez placed first individually with a time of 19:15.92, and is well en route for his second consecutive CIF-State Championship qualifier, and third overall in two sports. AIPHS Juniors Alex Liang (19:32.88), Kyle Wu (20:19.80), and Alberto Ramirez (21:06.15) placed second, third, and seventh respectively to earn All-BACSAC League Honors in yesterday’s meet at Oakland’s Skyline High School.

The AIPHS Lady Eagles Cross Country Team also had a great day, placing second in the BACSAC Championships with a team score of 50, sandwiched between LPS Richmond’s first place score (19) and just edging out rival Oakland Charter (55). With a time of 26.52.65, Lady Eagles Junior Sophia Huang placed seventh to earn All-BACSAC League Honors.

In the combined Junior Varsity competitions, the Boys emerged first overall in the BACSAC, and just third behind Oakland Tech (26), and Skyline High (29).

In reflecting on the team’s physical and personal growth of both his Varsity and JV teams, Head Coach Jard Davis credits AIMS’s unique culture of hard work for their successes. “There have been great strides (no pun intended) taken by our senior members over the years and I look forward to handing down the personal and team growth that continues to blossom from our traditions of rigor and team spirit.”
