(OAKLAND, Ca) Depending on whom narrates the story, the AIPHS Boy Volleyball team’s April 18 matchup against Oakland High went as well as expected for a first year athletic program.
At times, the Golden Eagles showed flashes of a burgeoning team, even as they lost their first sets against the Wildcats (25-15) and (25-20). But at the end of the second set, Golden Eagles Coach Cassandra Choi and varying teammates delivered the pep talk of their lives - and even enlisted the crowd support with several ‘Who’s Strong, AIMSTRONG’ chants to help take the fight to the Wildcats.
It worked. The motivation fired up the usually subdued boys team, prompting several ‘O-A-K-L-A-N-D’ chants from the Oakland High (2-2) home crowd. For mere moments, the Golden Eagles were laser-focused and seemed to have a fighting chance throughout much of the third set, before eventually falling (25-18) to the defending CIF-Oakland Champions. For a moment in time, the Golden Eagles felt like they belonged - even prompting respectful overtures from the winner team and guests. Still, the feeling of defeat was bittersweet and left the spent Golden Eagles to ponder what might have been.
Certainly, the Golden Eagles (1-4) will need to display the same laser focus and ample dosage of crowd support to help upset the Oakland Tech Bulldogs (3-3) this Monday, April 23, at Oakland Tech’s Gymnasium. With a victory, the Golden Eagles can close out its 2018 OAL matches against Skyline High Titans (3-8), this Wednesday, at Skyline High’s Gymnasium, before heading into the final home stretch of the season against Kipp King Collegiate, LPS Richmond, and rival Oakland Charter Academy. #AIMSTRONG
