(OAKLAND, Ca) The AIPHS Lady Eagles (3-2) continued their two-game winning streak with a 7-0 shutout and defensive performance over Oakland International High School.
Although the match was held at Oakland Tech’s soccer field less than a few miles away from the Lady Eagles’ home base, save for the team’s only goal by junior Saron Abrham (#11) nine minutes into the game, the Lady Eagles were sluggish throughout much of the first half. Halftime proved to be a welcome relief from the heat and Oakland International’s stubborn interior defense.
Lady Eagles senior Paola Barron (#14) finally connected in the second half and finished the game with four goals and one assist, improving her extraordinary goal total to 12 goals and three assists in four games. Junior Vanessa Rivas (#9) is proving to be a steady contributor to the team as she scored her fourth goal in five games, courtesy of a Saron Abrham assist.
But the goal of the day and potential play of the year belonged to Saron Abrham, as she scored an impressive header goal on a Paola Barron corner kick assist.
“We had a slow start to the game, but we finished strong,” remarked Coach Yohannes Harrish. “Although it was a good team win, our mentality is still not where we need it to be. A good win is good, but a great performance is better and much more satisfying. I am proud of the girls for what they have accomplished so far, but there is a lot more to be accomplished.”
With Paola Barron’s second consecutive four-goal game, Paola is approaching elite territory. With 3 games remaining in the regular season, and potentially two more including a playoff and potential championship run, according to MaxPreps.com, Paola is ranked #4 in the state of California in goals scored this season. While Paola believes that it is an honor to be considered one of the top scorers in the state, Paola and her teammates are focused on their next match and their goal of winning a championship in their first year of sports at AIPHS.
Up next, the Lady Eagles will face Oakland Unity High School, this Tuesday, April 17, at 4PM, at Raimondi Field, in West Oakland. #AIMSTRONG!
