(RICHMOND, Ca) The AIPHS Lady Eagles soccer set a team record for the most goals scored in a game by defeating Richmond Cal Prep 5-2 to improve to .500 at the midway point of the season. Senior Paola Barron (#14) also highlighted this special occasion by scoring and impressive four goals and one assist to set the mark for the most goals scored in a single game in team history.
In the first half, Richmond Cal Prep speedster Alana Burt (#20) scored the first goal of the game to put them ahead 1-0. But moments later, Paola Barron answered with a score of her own to tie up the match. Yet, after a Lady Eagles defensive lapse which resulted in RCP’s Alana Burt’s second goal of the half, Paola Barron scored her second goal of the match to end the first half in a 2-2 tie. To wit, Paola was only warming up.
In the second half, Paola earned a hat-trick within minutes, and later, her fourth goal of the day - her eighth goal scored for the year. Later, Junior Vanessa Rivas (#9) scored AIPHS’s fifth and final goal of the game, her third goal of the season - fittingly with the assist by Paola Barron.
Despite Paola Barron’s historic day, Coach Yohannes Harrish credits his halftime adjustments and emphasis on team play for the Lady Eagles’ (2-2) defensive shutout of RCP in the second half: “We had a slow start to the game, but we picked it up second half and managed to finish it. The energy level on the second half is what we need to have every game. Overall, I am proud of the girls for turning it around."
Up next, the AIPHS Lady Eagles will look to continue its stellar play against Oakland International High School, this Friday, April 13, at Oakland Tech, in Oakland, CA, @ 4PM.
