Lady Eagles Overcome Sluggish Start to Defeat Richmond Cal Prep in Four Sets; Earn #3 Seed in Wednesday’s Playoff Game Against #2 Oakland Unity

Although the AIPHS Lady Eagles and Richmond Cal Prep Volleyball teams both entered tonight’s season finale with guaranteed spots in the BACSAC Division B playoffs, with a victory over RCP, the Lady Eagles could earn the #3 seed and enter the playoffs with a three-game winning streak.

Yet, on its home-court, RCP had other plans, as they capitalized on early Lady Eagles miscues and claimed the first set by a score of 25-22.  The Lady Eagles eventually shook off the dust and bounced back to take the second and third sets by scores of 25-23 and 26-24, respectively.

But with the game locked at 24-23 in favor of AIPHS in the fourth set, Lady Eagles senior captain Ariam Mahray (#3) dove and digged on a Richmond Cal Prep serve to return the ball over the net, landing just shy of their out-of-bounds line, to not only end the game, but to qualify for what could be considered one of the most outstanding plays of the year.  “Today’s game was very intense,” Ariam stated. “Our team really showed their yearn to be in the championship and won this game 3-1 against Richmond Cal Prep. We knew that if we won this game, we would earn our seat for 3rd place in the league, which will open great opportunities for my teammates and I.”

Despite the Lady Eagles’ display of growth, grit, and determination, they will not be able to savor this victory for long, as they must quickly refocus their efforts on the playoffs and defeating the #2 ranked Oakland Unity High School, the only team to defeat the Lady Eagles more than once this season.   With a win over Oakland Unity, the Lady Eagles will play in the BACSAC Division B Championships in the first year of AIPHS’s first ever sports program.  Certainly, Coach Kristina “Tina” Case doesn’t plan on closing the chapter on her team’s fairytale season: “Championships…Here we come!”

Wednesday’s game against Oakland Unity has been officially dubbed a #Redout night, in which the Lady Eagles will don their all red volleyball uniforms.  All AIPHS students and fans are asked to wear red and the first ten students to attend the game will receive a free AIMS Family T-Shirt, courtesy of the AIPHS Student Government Association.
